Answers

  1. Who can apply for ScotiaLife accidental death insurance?
    Scotiabank customers and their spouses who are between the ages of 18 and 74 and are Canadian residents.
  2. What is considered an accidental death?
    Accidental death results from accidental bodily injury caused solely and directly by an accidental, external, violent and visible means. It does not include death from sickness, disease or any naturally occurring conditions.
  3. Who is my beneficiary?
    If you buy spousal coverage, then each of you will be considered the other's beneficiary. If there is no insured spouse, then you may name any beneficiary or beneficiaries you like. Insurance benefits will be paid to your estate if there is no beneficiary named or living at the time of your accidental death.
  4. When does my paid accidental death insurance coverage begin?
    Provided your first premium has been paid, your coverage begins on the date stated on your Certificate Schedule. We give you 30 days to review your plan. Should you decide, for any reason, to cancel your coverage within 30 days of receiving your Certificate of Insurance, we will refund any premiums you may have paid.
  5. When does my paid accidental death insurance coverage end?
    Your insurance is effective until the certificate anniversary immediately following your 80th birthday. However, your coverage is reduced by 50% at age 75.
    Your coverage will also end automatically on any of the following:
    • the date the 30-day grace period for an unpaid premium expires;
    • for an insured spouse, the date the insured spouse ceases to be a spouse of the insured Scotiabank customer;
    • for an insured spouse, the date of termination of insurance coverage on the insured with whom the insured spouse has been enrolled for coverage;
    • the date a claim is paid on your behalf;
    • the date we receive your written request to cancel your coverage; or
    • the date you are notified in writing that the group insurance policy is terminated;
    • the date the insured person dies.
  6. Is there a maximum accidental death insurance coverage amount?
    Total maximum paid coverage is $350,000 per insured. The maximum amount is reduced by 50% at age 75.
  7. Will my rates increase as I get older or if my health changes?
    No, once you've enrolled, your rate is guaranteed never to increase for as long as you keep your coverage.
  8. What if I change my mind after buying this accidental death insurance?
    To ensure you're 100% satisfied, we give you 30 days after receiving your certificate to review the plan details. If you decide to cancel within this review period, simply tell us in writing, indicating your name, Certificate of Insurance number and the date you wish to cancel your coverage. We'll refund any premiums you've paid - with no hassle and no questions asked.

    No, ScotiaLife Accidental Death Insurance is only available by calling 1-800-387-9844 or by completing and submitting the enrolment form ( 400 kb).
  10. What is the definition of spouse?
