Burglar Proof Your Home
Your home is a place where you should always feel safe and secure. Unfortunately, home invasions occur quite often. Here are a few tips on how to secure your home from being burglarized.
Keep your lights on. Leave your lights on in a bathroom or turn on a few night-lights throughout the house when you go out or to bed. Having lights set on a timer is a worry free way to have your lights automatically turn on and off while you are out. Installing lights or motion detectors around the exterior of your house is also a good method of protection.
Trim your trees and bushes. Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed to prevent intruders from hiding in them.
Do not hide a spare key. Although you may have a good hiding spot, it is safer for you to leave the key with someone that you trust.
Bring in your outdoor tools. Do not leave your tools, like a ladder, in the yard. The last thing you want is to give the intruder an easy way to enter.
Buy an alarm system. An alarm system can be expensive; however, it can also prevent somebody from entering your home. With this added protection, you can feel safe knowing that you have 24-hour surveillance on your home.
While on vacation:
- Have someone pick up your mail and newspaper. Whether you are going away for a weekend or a month, it is a good idea to have a trusted family member, friend or neighbour pick up your mail and newspaper. Having newspapers on your front porch is one of the easiest ways for criminals to identify that you are away. If you are unable to have someone pick up your mail and newspaper, consider pausing deliveries for the duration of your trip.
- Have someone visit or stay at your home. Have someone you trust come by or stay at your house while you are away. They can keep an eye on your home for any suspicious people or activity.
